New music education scholarship established
ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ has announced a new scholarship, the Diane Baker Scholarship in Music, for students pursuing music education in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music. The scholarship was established in February 2016 with gifts from Baker’s many friends and colleagues.
Recipients must be full-time music education majors of any class level, and to remain on the scholarship, they must maintain a GPA of 3.0.
Baker, 1950-2016, was a native and resident of Beaumont. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Music-Instrumental and a Master of Music in Music Education from ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ. While attending LU, Baker was a percussionist in the marching band, symphonic ensemble and dance/jazz band and a member of LU’s chapter of Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity.
Baker was a band director for 40 years. She worked at every University Interscholastic League classification level and was instructor of percussion at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ. Her bands have won countless honors and awards, such as sweepstakes, honor bands and state marching contest recognition.
Also a member of Phi Beta Mu and the Texas Music Adjudicator Association, Baker served Region 10 for 30 years as region secretary, president and band chair. She was most recently a representative of Swicegood Music Company where she traveled and mentored other directors.
