Manchaiah honored for worldwide work in audiology

Manchaiah with awardVinaya Manchaiah, director of audiology at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, was recently honored by the NRI Institute at the Leela Palace, Chanakyapuri, New-Delhi, India, for his work in the field of education.

Originally from South India, Manchaiah holds a Ph.D. in disability research from Linkoping University, Sweden. He also holds a number of degrees including an M.B.A. from Swansea University, United Kingdom, Doctor of Audiology from Nova Southeastern University, M.S. in Audiology from the University of Southampton, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Speech and Hearing from the University of Mysore, India.

“I was chosen for this award in the field of education,” Manchaiah said. “I come from India and have worked in the United Kingdom. I feel very honored. I think in the last 30 years no one from the speech and hearing discipline has received this award.”

“It was interesting for me to go there and meet other people who are making a difference in society,” Manchaiah said.

“Dr. Vinaya Manchaiah serves as the Jo Mayo Endowed Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science,” said Department Chair Monica Harn. “He exemplifies the role of teacher, researcher, and collaborator. His contributions have put the program of audiology at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ in the national and global spotlight. This prestigious award exemplifies the impact of his research and his significant contributions to society.”

In 2016, Manchaiah was named to the Jerger Future Leaders of Audiology by the American Academy of Audiology, one of only a dozen individuals named nationwide. Manchaiah is also the co-founder and director for strategic planning for the non-profit non-governmental organization Audiology India, for which he served as president from 2011 to 2015. The organization seeks to foster ear and hearing health care in India.

Bharat Samman Awards are given to select people of Indian Origin living in India and abroad for their outstanding achievements in the chosen field of activities for the contribution to the socio-economic development of India along with the country of their adoption.
