New scholarship honors Gabriel 'Tony' Martin

The ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ Foundation has endowed a new scholarship in memory of Gabriel “Tony” Martin.

Martin spent the majority of his career at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, starting as an adjunct professor of deaf education in 1989. The Dr. Gabriel A. “Tony” Martin Memorial Scholarship has been established in the ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ Foundation through the generosity of friends and family to support students in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education in bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral studies.

In 1994, he became the chair of the Department of Deaf Education and Deaf Studies where he served for more than 20 years. He was instrumental in setting up the doctoral program in the Deaf Education program at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, writing, receiving, and overseeing grants to fund the program.

In addition, he was very involved with Association of College Educators-Deaf/Hard of Hearing serving multiple times as president, president-elect or treasurer.  He was also the director of program evaluations for the Council on Education of the Deaf for six years.

He was serving as executive director of the Office of Planning and Assessment and the liaison of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools-Commission on Colleges at the time of his passing. Prior to joining the faculty at LU, he worked for seven years in the Beaumont Independent School District as a K-12 Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teacher.
