Carter, a ‘newsmaker’ finalist
The Press Club of Southeast Texas has named Keith Carter, who currently holds the Endowed Walles Chair of the Performing Arts at ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, one of five “Newsmaker of the Year” finalists.
Keith Carter is an internationally recognized photographer who has exhibited in more than 100 solo shows in 13 countries, and has had 13 books of his work published as well as a documentary film, “A Certain Alchemy,” released by Anthropy Arts, New York, in 2006.
A graduate of ËÄ»¢Ó°ÊÓ, he has been awarded the university's three highest teaching honors - the Regents’ Professor Award, the University Professor Award and Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Prize.
Carter is known for creating blurred images with limited depth of field, which give his work a sense of mystery. His newest work deals with our changing environment and loss of animal species. He is experimenting with colors by digitally replacing natural color palettes with hues from old master paintings.
He is the recipient of the 2009 Texas Medal of Arts and called a "Poet of the Ordinary" by the Los Angeles Times. Carter has been featured on the arts segment of nationally televised CBS Sunday Morning, and he is the recipient of the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center For Documentary Studies at Duke University and Artist of the Year 2009 from the Houston Art League.
In addition to receiving the prestigious Texas Medal of Arts, Carter has been awarded the Regent’s Professor Award from the Texas State University System.
Mr. Carter’s work is included in numerous private and public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The George Eastman House and The Wittliff Collection of Southwestern and Mexican Photography at Texas State University.
Other newsmaker finalists include: Bishop Curtis Guillory, Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Beaumont; W.T. Johnston, head coach of the Newton Eagles; DeAndre Nico, “The Voice” contestant from Port Arthur; Paula O’Neal, executive director of Some Other Place.
A “Newsmaker of the Year” will be selected and announced at the Press Club of Southeast Texas’ Excellence in Media Awards banquet June 7.
