Staying alert: Improving your energy level with healthier habits

We have all experienced physical and mental exhaustion due to the high demands of being a college student, and all the extra responsibilities that come with being adults. Have you ever felt more tired and the need to rest after eating a heavy or fatty meal?  If yes, that is because large meals force your body to use valuable energy stores for the task of digestion. Research studies have shown that high fat and excessive nutrient intakes on a regular basis can lead to frequently occurring symptoms of sleepiness. One way to improve your energy level is by eating better!

1. Eat breakfast                                                                          
When you skip the first meal of the day, you are starting off with an energy deficit, causing the body to use energy reserves that cause your metabolism to slow down. Consequently, making you feel sluggish. Breakfast is vital for the energy needed to begin your day!

2. Eating balanced meals
Eating whole grains, fiber-rich vegetables, fruits, nuts, protein, low fat dairy products, and healthy oils can help avoid the lag in energy that is commonly seen in consuming foods with added sugars. Eating these types of foods too frequently can create an energy crash.

3. Eat small frequent meals
Eating small meals and snacks every few hours throughout the day will provide a steady supply of nutrients needed for the body and brain, helping to curb cravings that can result in overeating and maintaining energy levels.

 

4. Avoid energy zappers
Added sugars such as soda, sugary coffee, candy and energy drinks can provide a quick burst of energy but once this fades away, you can feel depleted. Therefore, remember to limit these and instead consume naturally occurring sugars found in dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains that provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber to keep your energy levels steady. Try making a homemade smoothie with all of these natural occurring sugars!
